The ASL 2023 Roadmap kicked off with the Asia Solidarity Lab Fellowship under the theme, “Powering up a movement for just energy solutions in Asia,” meant to be even more focused on supercharging the growth of the Asia Solidarity Lab Fellows’ Cohort. We introduced more dedicated and intimate learning spaces, both online and off, created to support the Cohort’s evolution as leaders in the climate space.

This year’s program design for our brilliant Fellows steered towards organizing and movement-building towards energy justice and just transition. A specific focus on Training and Facilitation fleshed out the “training for trainers” aspect of the program more than ever before.

Ara, Philippines 🇵🇭
He/Him

Ara started his journey into activism as a student at the Polytechnic University of the Philippines. He currently serves as an Advocacy Officer for 350 Pilipinas’ campus organizing work that is pioneering solutions-based campaigning inside state universities.

Arati, Nepal 🇳🇵
She/Her

Arati is a researcher and climate justice activist with a background in climate science. She currently works as a Senior Research Officer at the Climate Justice Program at Digo Bikas Institute (DBI). She is currently involved in policy research, advocacy and grassroots actions on cross-cutting issues of climate change and leading programs on Just Climate Finance, Energy Democracy, and intersectional climate issues. She presented research from DBI on “Women-led cooperatives and climate finance in Nepal” at the COP 27 conference in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt. Her commitment to the environment and climate change spans more than a decade, beginning with her selection as a City Environment Volunteer for the Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC).

Fathan, Indonesia 🇮🇩
He/Him

Fathan seeks to optimize human-environment interaction by utilizing technology in his studies. In local NGOs, he has also thrived making climate justice more accessible by organizing Green Public Interest Lawyers education programs for youth and documenting Indigenous and Local Communities Conserved Areas across Indonesia using his geographical expertise. As a climate activist, he is raising awareness towards more ambitious climate commitment and action by acting as Campaign Coordinator at Climate Rangers Jakarta. He is a lifelong learner with a diverse advocacy background who is always on the lookout for new knowledge and ways of collaborating to achieve social and ecological justice.

Hanae, Japan 🇯🇵
She/Her

Hanae is a freelance writer, photographer, and soon-to-be cinematographer based in Japan, originally from Morocco. She has collaborated with renowned organizations such as the BBC, the Japan Times, UNIDO, and was also a communications officer with 350 Japan.

Their involvement in the climate movement dates back to 2019 when she joined Fridays For Future Tokyo. Over time, she played a pivotal role in organizing Climate Live Japan for approximately 2.5 years and are currently a part of the Fridays For Future Climate Justice Project. In addition to her climate activism, she’s actively engaged with Moving Beyond Hate, a movement addressing racism in Japan, and POSSE, a labor movement in collaboration with workers’ unions in Japan.

During her leisure time, she finds solace in reading, visiting museums for continued learning, and relaxing in parks.

Hannah, Pakistan 🇵🇰
She/Her

Decolonization and climate justice lay at the heart of all of Hannah’s work, whether that be organising flood donation drives across Pakistan’s provinces through 350 Pakistan or creating sustainable streams of income for Sindh’s indigenous women through chambeli.pk. Having received a specialisation from Yale University on Religions and Ecology, Hannah believes in a world where indigenous views of nature forge our future, and where the innate language between humans, beings, and even non-beings is revived.

In her free time, she loves spending time in nature or practising Arabic calligraphy, and to swim with dolphins in clear waters is at the top of her bucket list!
